Sea of Kings by Melissa Hope – I started this today and it is pretty fantastic so far, the world building is rich and vivid. I already adore the characters and it’s hard to put the book down. Yay for another potential middle grade win.

Currently reading –

Rae and the Blood of the Nectar by Payal Doshi. There is a lot to love about this one. Portal fantasy, middle grade, Indian mc, so much magic. 

Recently Finished –

The Treason of Robyn Hood by D. Lieber. Dieselpunk, gender swapped fantasy. A very fast paced read with some sexy thrown in for fun.

Next –

A Journey into Dreams by D.R. O’Shea. I read a chapter or two of this earlier in the month and the writing is wonderful, I’m looking forward to getting back to it.

Favourites of 2020

Well it’s a week or so later than I originally planned, but finally it’s here. My wrap up of 2020. Life wise all has been well here, where I live we have managed to avoid, for now, Covid affecting our lives too much. The kids had a couple of weeks off school and a lot of business was closed for a while. I was off work for six months, but a lot of other people were affected way more than us. My daughter and I have started volunteering at a wildlife hospital, my son has taken up a new sport and I’m looking forward to trying new things in 2021 (Well maybe saying that I’m looking forward to new things is a bit strong lol). I also fell in love with reading middle grade books and they kept me reading while I was teetering on the verge of a massive slump.

Amari and The Night Brothers by B. B. Alston

This past month has been a time of silence on the review front which means I missed my slot on this blog tour, ran by Dave from Write Reads Tours. My lack of review is not a negative reflection of this book, in fact it’s the opposite.. I wanted to write this review when I had some time to put it together, not while rushing around trying to do 100 things. I wanted to attempt to give this book the review it deserves.

What’s on my TBR – NetGalley Edition

NetGalley, the light of my reading life and the bane of my reading existence. I was recently having a squizz through my NetGalley back list and to be honest it’s pretty depressing. Like many, I went hard early on, never expecting to be approved for anything and it got out of control. Then I went full ostrich, stuck my head in the sand and I’ve been ignoring a heap of them ever since.

If you think this is me finally ready to deal with my 2018 chaos, you would be wrong. I’ll reveal that shame in another post. (Maybe by then I’ll have made some headway through it.) This time I wanted to talk about the exciting reads I’ve got that are coming out in 2021.

Top Middle Grade Reads 2020

This year has been an absolute shit show for my reading habits. My love for big chunky books has shrivelled up and died in the corner and it’s hard to hold my attention. My saving grace has been middle grade books. They have been sweet, wholesome, brutal and everything I needed to keep reading this year.

The Secrets of Star Whales by Rebecca Thorne

Once again middle grade stories of wonder and magic are getting me through. This was a wholesome, heart breaking read about a boy who lost his father and the lengths he will go to, to feel close to him again. It was a tale of friendship, grief and self discovery. It had it all.

An interview with Laurel Gale

For me, this year has been the time of the middle grade reads. The range and depth available blows my mind and one of the books I enjoyed earlier this year was Story Magic by Laurel Gale. It was a tale of hope and it made my heart warm. You can find my review HERE.
