Well it’s a week or so later than I originally planned, but finally it’s here. My wrap up of 2020. Life wise all has been well here, where I live we have managed to avoid, for now, Covid affecting our lives too much. The kids had a couple of weeks off school and a lot of business was closed for a while. I was off work for six months, but a lot of other people were affected way more than us. My daughter and I have started volunteering at a wildlife hospital, my son has taken up a new sport and I’m looking forward to trying new things in 2021 (Well maybe saying that I’m looking forward to new things is a bit strong lol). I also fell in love with reading middle grade books and they kept me reading while I was teetering on the verge of a massive slump. Continue reading “Favourites of 2020”

The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley
AMBITIOUS, CREATIVE, FANTASTICAL, DIVERSE, EPIC.
Once again Hurley has shown us that she is an absolute force. I can only imagine how daunting this project was purely because of how epic in scope it is. I think the word dense could be used to describe this book (I don’t mean that in a bad way), there is so much worldbuilding, there are so many characters, there are so many cultures and histories and we get to dive into it all. She doesn’t hold us back. She gives us as readers everything she has and she smashed it out of the park. This is the longest book by Hurley I have read and as with her other stories she doesn’t waste words. Every word on the page has a purpose. I fucking love that. Books I’m looking forward to
After a bumper year of new releases in 2019, it looks like 2020 might just top it. I thought I would list a few of the upcoming releases I’m looking forward to. Just those in the next six months, otherwise the list will probably go on forever. It also happens to tie in with this weeks Top Ten Tuesday post. Winning.
Lady Hotspur by Tessa Gratton
Release date – 7/1/20

My 2019 in review
Hey, Hello, Welcome. Its been well over a month since I even attempted to do anything blog related. I have a habit of going hard at something and then completely dying in the arse and it’s very obvious when you look at the way I post. Some months I post several times a week, others I only post once and December, well that was the month of silence. I didn’t even read a book in December. I had a dnf but that is it. I was all kinds of busy in December, it was chaos. The erratic posting probably won’t change in 2020.
My productivity levels are often tied to my mental health, which cycles throughout the year. When I’m hyper focused I can smash through posts, but once my brain starts to fog up, I struggle to push through that and that is when I divert my attention to real life stuff. My mental health has definitely done it’s best to kick my ass this past year, and I’ve had months of bouncing of the walls and weeks where I felt like I was suffocating and I didn’t know how to keep functioning. But I have a fantastic support network, a wonderful psychologist, a family that loves me and a husband who can let me hide when needed, hug me when needed and remind me to put the phone down and pay attention to my kids when needed. This isn’t a woe is me post, I don’t expect or need sympathy, it is exactly what the title suggests, a review of my year. All of my year. Continue reading “My 2019 in review”
Sci-Fi wrap up
Sci-Fi month has come to an end. A big thank you to our two lovely hosts, Lisa and Imyril both had a massive job on their hands and they nailed it.
I said at the start of November that reading more Sci-Fi was one of my goals this year and I think it’s safe to say I’ve done way better than I expected. Throughout November I managed to smash out a series that I’ve had on my shelves for years and another couple from NetGalley. I realised that there is so much more to the Sci-Fi genre than spaceships and other worlds. Continue reading “Sci-Fi wrap up”
Stacking The Shelves
Sci-Fi Month Edition
A weekly post where I can brag about my new books? Yes please. Granted I definitely won’t have something to post every week, I’ll just do it as required. I will be including everything from my purchases, to NetGalley, gifts and books from authors.
For more information head over to Tynga’s Reviews.
As it’s Sci-Fi Month, I may have got a little click happy over in NetGalley. Also, I took full advantage of a couple of authors having their first books on Amazon for free. I think at least 90% of the books I gathered over the last 6 weeks are Sci-Fi. Continue reading “Stacking The Shelves”
Meet me in the future: Stories by Kameron Hurley
Elephants and Corpses was my very first introduction to Kameron Hurley’s writing several years back when Tor had it on their site. It was a first class story that made a lasting impression, yet its only in the last year that I have started buying and reading more of Hurley’s work. I sit back now and want to kick myself. So of course when I saw this on NetGalley I hit request as fast as I could and then put everything else on the backburner as soon as I was approved, even though I had a couple of months before it’s release day.
