Friday Face Off

The Friday Face Off meme was created by Books by Proxy and its an awesome opportunity to feature some cool cover art. All you have to do is choose a book cover that relates to the theme, which can be found over on Lynn’s page, post some covers and select your favourite.

This wasn’t as easy as I expected because I wanted it to be book I’d read or that is currently sitting on my TBR. It seems I don’t own many books with puffy dresses on the cover.

Meringue – the puffy dress

There were only three different covers for this book. The other two that were options for this week only had two.

The paperback and the kindle have different background colours with a different pose, but otherwise they are almost identical. The paperback wins out of those two. On the other hand the German edition is completely different and not really inline with the actual topic, but it’s really cute. I like it, so I select that one as winner of the day.

Which do you prefer?

This is my first time jumping onto this meme bandwagon and I thought I had it in the bag, but the curse of Ilona Andrews covers strikes again.

February Fun Times

Here we are, the kids go back to school this week, work has quietened down after the Christmas craziness and I have to do adult things like get my car serviced and all the after school activities are back on. I love having my kids home but little Sir spent more time playing Fortnite than he should have and as much as the family did lots of awesome things, I didn’t get to participate in all of it. I did get to see Dolittle today which I thought was brilliant. I laughed louder and more than anyone else in the cinema.

My reading plans Continue reading “February Fun Times”

Stacking The Shelves

A weekly post where I can gush about my new books? Yes please. Granted I definitely won’t have something to post every week, I’ll just do it as required. I will be including everything from my purchases, to NetGalley, gifts and books from authors.
For more information head over to Tynga’s reviews.

I was going so well. I had only spent $2.99 on books up until this last fortnight, then it all went out the window. I’ve probably only spent $50 or so now, but I requested a few from NetGalley and managed to grab an arc from a favourite author. Maybe next month I can keep it under $10, which is my goal.

The Mirror Empire by Kameron Hurley

A review?

AMBITIOUS, CREATIVE, FANTASTICAL, DIVERSE, EPIC.

Once again Hurley has shown us that she is an absolute force. I can only imagine how daunting this project was purely because of how epic in scope it is. I think the word dense could be used to describe this book (I don’t mean that in a bad way), there is so much worldbuilding, there are so many characters, there are so many cultures and histories and we get to dive into it all. She doesn’t hold us back. She gives us as readers everything she has and she smashed it out of the park. This is the longest book by Hurley I have read and as with her other stories she doesn’t waste words. Every word on the page has a purpose. I fucking love that. Old Man’s War by John Scalzi

This was a book I hadn’t really heard of until I joined Twitter and came across Scalzi’s account, his shenanigans and his cats. I then had the luck of finding the boxset in an op shop. It then sat on my shelves for over two years before I finally got the kick up the butt I needed when I joined Sci Fi Month.
A new life mission is to read all of his books. Continue reading “Old Man’s War by John Scalzi”
