I finished The Night Prince series. And if you have read any of my stacking the shelves updates you would know I was on a buying ban and couldn’t buy any new physical books until I had finished the series. I was so excited, I knew which book or five I wanted. There have been some amazing new releases out already this year, I wanted them all. I wanted all the pretty new books for my shelves. So you can imagine my utter despair when I discovered that I couldn’t get any of the books I wanted in paperback. I’m a tight ass, I don’t pay hardback price. DEVASTATED. First world problems I know. I decided to get a different book (great decision) and get the kindle version (I’ll get it in paperback later), and that led me to the other horror book I found.

Ebooks:

The Gulp by Alan Baxter – I may have a slight obsession with Alan Baxter’s books. This one was an absolute winner and my review can be found HERE.

We Are Wolves: A Horror Anthology by some incredibly talented authors and edited by Gemma Amor, Laurel Hightower and Cynthia Paleyo – This is one that I wasn’t searching for, it found me and boy am I glad. Feminist dark fantasy and horror. From the forward to the very last page, I was completely enamoured.

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse – I’ve had my eye on this since it was first released. I don’t know what the deal is at the moment, but I couldn’t get this in paperback either.

From blood and Ash by Jennifer L Armentrout – There is so much hype around this one. I’m hoping for dark and sexy fantasy.

That’s it from me this week. Have you read any of these? Do you have a favourite?

I’m on a strict buying ban. I can’t buy any of the new releases I want until I read the Night Prince series by Jeaniene Frost, I haven’t been book shopping. But my boss has her library in the office so when I went in to do some work I was surrounded by all the books she had decided to get rid off. Technically I haven’t broken my book buying ban. Plus my daughters step-mum always gets me book vouchers for Christmas, so they arrived over the last week. Continue reading “Stacking The Shelves”

This covers the last few books I picked up in 2020. I was in a pretty specific mood, plus I was lucky enough to be approached by an author which is always cool and 100% daunting.

Ebooks:

  • Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost – After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person’s darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude…until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world’s most infamous vampire…
    He’s the Prince of Night…
Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don’t call him Dracula. Vlad’s ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

  • Twice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost

Vasilisa by Julie MathisonVasilisa by Julie Mathison – Three witches, two children, one ogre — and nowhere to run.
It’s 1919, but in Edenfall, Pennsylvania, the Great War is not over — not for Vasilisa, at least. Papa is presumed dead on the fields of Flanders, Mama is being courted by an absolute ogre, and now Babka, her beloved grandma, has had a bad spell. Or has she fallen under one? Only the Old Tales, the Russian fables Vasilisa was raised on, offer any comfort or counsel.
But what if they are more than child’s tales?
Enter Ivan, who jumps a train for Edenfall at midnight and finds Vasilisa in a real fix. Old Rus is calling from across time and both worlds, and if they heed the call, they might both get what they want. It won’t be easy. Three witches, two children, one ogre – they’re outnumbered and outclassed. Baba Yaga and Old Koschei are after the same thing — and each other — and the children are caught in the crosshairs. Vasilisa has a secret weapon, in the humblest of guises, but will the meek truly inherit the earth? Or will the mighty prevail? One thing is certain: it’s a fairy tale of their own making, a tale whose happy ending is ever in doubt.

I have spent this month reading all the reviews and recommendation posts and one thing I have realised is that the sci-fi genre is huge. There are so many different sub genres that pretty much anyone could find something they like. While I have been doing my best not to purchase every awesome book I see, I have been very inspired. I thought this week I would only focus on my recent NetGalley acquisitions. I’ve been in such a slump, that nothing I own is calling my name so I have turned to NetGalley for some more middle grade goodness and and a couple of others that tickled my fancy. I really suck at not buying books. I want to say that in my defence I’ve read a substantial amount that were on my last Stacking the Shelves post, but even if I hadn’t I would have ended up with more books. Plus I love bargains. These are from the last month, so it’s not that bad.

Physical books:
The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski – I watched the first four episodes of the show and thought it was epic. I have yet to finish the show, but I can read the books now. I already had The Last Wish, so over a couple of weeks I grabbed most of the others.

The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood – Sometimes my local Big W stocks fantasy that I can’t wait for and it would be a crime to go leave them there. I’m 100 or so pages in and the writing is beautiful.

Ebooks:
The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S Villoso – The hype got to me with this one. Plus you can’t go past a series titled Chronicles of the Bitch Queen.

The First of Shadows by Deck Matthews – I saw Jason’s review and decided I needed to give it a whirl. It was a quick, enjoyable read. Hopefully I’ll get a review up sometime soon.

NetGalley:
The Iron Crown by M.A. Grant – I really enjoyed book one (REVIEW) and I’m halfway through book two at the moment. I didn’t think my request would be accepted but lucky for me it was.

The Iron Crown by M.A. Grant

I was going so well. I had only spent $2.99 on books up until this last fortnight, then it all went out the window. I’ve probably only spent $50 or so now, but I requested a few from NetGalley and managed to grab an arc from a favourite author. Maybe next month I can keep it under $10, which is my goal.
