I really suck at not buying books. I want to say that in my defence I’ve read a substantial amount that were on my last Stacking the Shelves post, but even if I hadn’t I would have ended up with more books. Plus I love bargains. These are from the last month, so it’s not that bad.

Physical books:
The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski – I watched the first four episodes of the show and thought it was epic. I have yet to finish the show, but I can read the books now. I already had The Last Wish, so over a couple of weeks I grabbed most of the others.

The Unspoken Name by A.K. Larkwood – Sometimes my local Big W stocks fantasy that I can’t wait for and it would be a crime to go leave them there. I’m 100 or so pages in and the writing is beautiful.

Ebooks:
The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S Villoso – The hype got to me with this one. Plus you can’t go past a series titled Chronicles of the Bitch Queen.

The First of Shadows by Deck Matthews – I saw Jason’s review and decided I needed to give it a whirl. It was a quick, enjoyable read. Hopefully I’ll get a review up sometime soon.

NetGalley:
The Iron Crown by M.A. Grant – I really enjoyed book one (REVIEW) and I’m halfway through book two at the moment. I didn’t think my request would be accepted but lucky for me it was.

Currently reading –
Empire Ascendant by Kameron Hurley – Yes, I’m still going on this. It’s not because it’s bad, it’s because I’ve actually been busy and I’m taking it slow and enjoying the ride.

Magic Unleased (Venators #1) by Devri Walls – I will get this read in time for the blog tour. I will get this read in time for the blog tour.

Recently Finished –
Skycircus by Peter Bunzl – Great middle grade read. Review should be up soon.

Ruin (Gods #1) by Samantha Towle – Second chance romances are like candy, I cant help but love them. This was my oldest NetGalley, almost two years old. I’m a bad book blogger.

Two NetGalley books… Who even am I? Now just to get the reviews done.

Next –
Binti Home by Nnedi Okofaror – I’m aiming to have all three finished by the end of February. I still haven’t gotten to this one yet, but it will be my read between big books I think.

The Summoned Ones: Flight to Bericea by Darryl A. Woods

Out Now

Can a group of college-aged friends from a small Kentucky town actually be the Summoned Ones of prophecy, called to a strange world filled with magic and devastated by war? Can they save the lives of the desperate inhabitants and help them defeat a wicked tyrant? Their epic journey will push them to the limits of their endurance. This unlikely group will discover truths about themselves and experience another world beyond their imagination.

The Summoned Ones by Darryl A. Woods coverSynopsis –
The Bericean army was in Malabrim for the ninth straight fighting season. Over the past 9 years, Zybaro, the leader of a small band of unknowns, had evolved from his days as a minor usurper of a tiny kingdom. Now, almost the entire country of Malabrim was under Zybaro’s control, and his army was large enough to easily challenge Bericea’s army. Still, Bericea continued its raids into Malabrim, hoping to stem Zybaro’s methodical progress and thwart his tyrannical means of control. Zybaro had seized village after village, forcing anyone capable of joining his army and enslaving all who remained in deplorable working conditions to supply his army.

This latest conflict with Zybaro had pushed General Darnon to a decision, one he had resisted making for over a year. Though he still held grave reservations about the Prophecies, he was willing to support the clerics who would attempt the summoning. The details of the ritual had recently been discovered in an ancient tome. The clerics were confident they could bring forth the Summoned Ones of Prophecy, those mysterious beings who would aid Bericea in its time of greatest need.

Join the soldiers of Bericea and the Summoned Ones through a life-or-death struggle. The Summoned Ones was made up of a small college aged group of friends from a small Kentucky town near the Daniel Boone National Forrest, who find themselves somehow brought to a chaotic world through magic. Their epic journey will push the Summoned beyond the limits of their endurance. This unlikely group will discover many truths about themselves and experience another world beyond their imagination.

The Summoned Ones author headshotAbout the author –
Darryl Woods has a passion for telling stories, an appetite for reading fantasy, and a love of old movies. He remembers things in scenes, picturing the background, the clothing of the characters, small details like, wrist bands, jewelry, dogs crossing the street, but most of all the emotions and actions of the each participant in the scene. He would spend time, usually as he waited for sleep, thinking through those scenes, fleshing out details the book didn’t add, or recreating the scenes with differing outcomes. So, as the story of The Flight to Bericea developed the scenes that make up the story easily flowed from his vivid imagination.
Darryl’s favorite authors include Raymond Feist, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, Brian Jacques, David Eddings, Christopher Paolini, Terry Goodkind, and Piers Anthony. With this collection of epic fantasy authors, Darryl’s chosen genre had to include epic adventures, swordplay and magic.
Darryl’s childhood in rural Ohio, three miles from a small town, gave him plenty material for stories. Tales of his father’s many contraptions, fabricated from old parts, angle iron, and square tubing. These were lawnmowers powered by car engines, minibikes, and various types of cobbled together go-carts, including one with a bicycle front end, a car’s steering wheel and seat, and the backend of a cousin’s wrecked go-cart. His stories also included rural life; gardening, playing in the creek, helping neighbors with livestock, numerous family pets, and farm animals, or playing high school football.
As an adult Darryl graduated college with a degree in Systems Analysis, while at school he met his wife who he married shortly after graduation. Inspired by his father who never once used a repairman, and who built his own house, Darryl developed a passion for remodelling houses. He and his wife have remodelled four houses to date, after each one swearing to never start another.  While working as a computer consultant designing database, Darryl spent his evenings, weekends, and days off helping his father-in-law with his family business cutting timber, sawing lumber in his mill, and making pallets. All these activities gave Darryl an endless supply of stories. Telling and re-telling these stories over the years honed Darryl’s skills as a storyteller.

Along The Razor’s Edge by Rob J. Hayes

When Rob Hayes puts the word out that he is looking for bloggers to review his new book, my automatic response is flailing, a giant yes please and hoping I can get my greedy hands on it. As you can tell I was successful, I have since read it and it was bloody brilliant.

“At just fifteen years old, I had fought in the greatest war mankind has ever known. I had been one of the Orran’s most powerful Sourcerers, celebrated by our allies and feared by our enemies. I had helped bring prosperity to my emperor’s lands, destruction to his foes. And now I was a prisoner, my power gone with my Sources. There was only one place the Terrelans would send a prisoner as valuable as I – the Pit.” Continue reading “Along The Razor’s Edge by Rob J. Hayes”

February Fun Times

Here we are, the kids go back to school this week, work has quietened down after the Christmas craziness and I have to do adult things like get my car serviced and all the after school activities are back on. I love having my kids home but little Sir spent more time playing Fortnite than he should have and as much as the family did lots of awesome things, I didn’t get to participate in all of it. I did get to see Dolittle today which I thought was brilliant. I laughed louder and more than anyone else in the cinema.

I was going so well. I had only spent $2.99 on books up until this last fortnight, then it all went out the window. I’ve probably only spent $50 or so now, but I requested a few from NetGalley and managed to grab an arc from a favourite author. Maybe next month I can keep it under $10, which is my goal.
