Aaah, paranormal romance. This genre is my fairy floss. I love it and tend to overindulge and then avoid it for a while, before coming back and repeating the cycle.
Skye has magic, she has grown up with it but she fears it. She has been told she has great power but because she can’t control it, she is dangerous and must be bound. She hurt her twin River as a child and has never forgiven herself. An adult now, she lives with her friends, runs a successful childcare centre and visits her housebound brother as often as possible.
Her life is turned upside down when Jason McVale knocks her on her arse while on the ski runs. He is a were, a shifter, of course the alpha of the pack and he needs Skye to use her magic to help his pack. While Jason intended just to get her back to his pack where she belongs, nothing goes to plan. Jason soon realises she doesn’t know what he is, she isn’t using her magic, and she doesn’t remember her childhood. Also he is wildly attracted to her and in sleeping with her sets of her magic almost killing her and the mate bond kicks in.
While she tries to fight her attraction to Jason and work out what is happening to her and why her grandparents lied to her, Jason lurks on the edges, wooing her, trying to help her remember and protecting her.
This was a fun read. I loved that it was set in Australia, so I knew of some of the places mentioned. There was an interesting history, the bond between witches and wolves was not something I have come across before. It was really cool and I’m looking forward to the next book.
The first in the series, we get a lot of backstory and worldbuilding which you can expect from any first book, but it doesn’t detract from Skye and Jason’s story at all. They still shine through. Jason is an adorable alpha, they way he treats Skye is pretty great. Because neither characters have all the information, there is a lot of confusion and misunderstandings. At times this could make for frustrating reading and I do think some of the twist and turns where a little over the top. We are very much lead in one direction and then a random SURPRISE is thrown in our faces, but it was still an enjoyable read.
The side characters were fun and I look forward to getting into their stories in the next couple of books. From what I can gather, River will get his story told as well as Adam, Jason’s brother. I liked Jason’s relationship with his brother. He has a huge amount of respect for him and we discover just how important Adam is to the pack. I can’t wait for him to get his happy ever after.
All in all a fun quick read. I have book 2, Moon Bound, so I will be reading that soon.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGally in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
