Once again I prove that I’m terrible at sticking to any plans. I had grand dreams at the start of September. I was so excited about #SelfPubFantasyMonth and then it just so happened that the first book I read was a total stinker and blew all the wind out of my sails. I spent two weeks trying to write a review, before I gave up. Nobody needs that kind of negativity in their lives. Self-Pub Fantasy Month was an awesome idea started by Jason over at Off the TBR.
Although I didn’t get through as many books as I would have liked, I branched out of my comfort zone and picked up books I may not have given a chance before. I had already purchased a few self-published books on my kindle in anticipation of this, plus I picked up an extra. I’m 100% putting my faith in the peeps I follow on Twitter. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Rob J. Hayes, so I figured in the spirit of the month I would jump on the bandwagon.
I read – Stone Cold Magic by Jayne Faith
currently Reading – Servant of Rage by A.Z. Anthony
Purchased – City of Kings by Rob J. Hayes
I have started doing Top Ten Tuesday posts as well, I’ve missed a couple already even though I had done the prep work, I’d like to say I’ll do better this month, but I’ve already missed one.
I managed to get a couple of NetGalley reviews up which is always a good thing as I’m way behind.
Shadow Of The Exile by Mitchell Hogan, The Phoenix Empress by K. Arsenault Rivera, Broken by Sasha Marshall.
Oh and if you haven’t picked up Hidden City by Alan Baxter, what are you waiting for people. Get on it.
This month I added a few books to my collection. Most were from Op-Shops, a charity sale and a couple from the book store. Also I have a total cover crush on City Of Kings. Shawn King is a talented man.
I would like to be positive and say I’ll be consistent in October, get all my posts up, get through some NetGalley books and not request any more, but why lie to myself. I’ll continue doing my mish mash of things, hats off to all those who seem to have their blogging lives together.
I loved city of Kings! If you like Abercrombie, you’ll like this book, too. I still need to write the review though, I’m a bit behind😅

Have you read any of his other books?

No, but I want to try Where Loyalties Lie since it won SPFBO with such a high score. Have you read any other book by him?

I haven’t either, but noticed when that this book is set in the same world as his other 2 trilogies, they are all just set in different areas. So this can be read as a complete standalone. If this is good, i’ll definitely be heading back to see what the other books are like as well

I’ve heard that they aren’t supposed to be as dark as City of Kings, but I’d like to see how the characters started out and just read more about them.

Glad you tried. The month turned out bad for me too as you know. But I’m excited you found some more self-pub books to try. I’ll be looking forward to what you think of Hayes’ book. I haven’t read it yet.

Well, Hidden City sounds pretty great–100% added to my TBR. And I’ll be trying a Sarah Crossan book (Moonrise) for the first time this month, which I’m pretty excited about. 🙂

Make sure you have a spare hour or two for Moonrise as you won’t want to put it down.
