Narrowing down a list of my favourite reads to just 5 is tough. I’ve done it, but I’ll probably cheat at the end and tack on a few others, cause its my post and I can…
5. Hello, Goodbye by Emily Brewin. This was a total surprise packet. I won it through Goodreads, and it’s my favourite win of this year. Its set in 1968 Victoria, where country girl Maya’s world is turned upside down when she finds out she’s pregnant to her boyfriend, who is awaiting draft orders. It is wonderful Australian historical fiction. You can get it from Amazon, Booktopia, Book Depository.
4. Arcanum Unbounded by Brandon Sanderson. Containing a collection of not so short stories from his different planets in the Cosmere, it brings all his ideas, world building and hints together, to give you a greater understanding of what he has built with his other books. It is worth a read, just beware of possible spoilers. Even his novellas are epic. You can pick it up from Amazon, Book Depository, Booktopia
3. The Black Witch by Laurie Forest. Solid fantasy, aimed at YA. It has a diverse range of characters and brings up some really good points about learned racism and oppression. Booktopia, Amazon, Book Depository
2. The Build-Up Season by Megan Jacobson. Australian contemporary at its finest. A smooth, fast read. My review is here – The Build-up Season by Megan Jacobson. You can get it from Booktopia, Amazon, Book Depository
1. Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. My top read of this year. I’m calling it early because I don’t think anything could knock this off its podium. It has stuck with me, the world, the characters, owlbears. I love it all. It was so fun seeing a retired group of mercenaries get back out there and do their thing, while suffering from sore knees and backs. Within the first 20 pages I cried, and not just a little cry, I fucking sobbed. The amount of emotion he managed to put into the book in such a short space of time was impressive. I wanted to say the book has heart but now I have flashes of Captain planet in my head. It is epic, fun fantasy that is a must read. You can get it from Booktopia, Amazon, Book Depository.
So that’s my list, I’ve managed to do it and not add anymore. Yay for decisive me. Have you read them?
Kings of the wyld sounds good to me!

It is definitely worth a look. The second book is out in a couple of months, so I’m going to do a reread beforehand. So much fun 🙂

The Black Witch was my favorite read of 2017!! I thought that it was nice to read of real world issue in a fantasy novel!! Pleasure & knowledge, can’t go wrong!

Yes, it was a great read that I thought really hit the nail on the head, with the way it discussed racism and misogyny. I love a book that can start conversations and make people a little more away of what is going on around them.

Kings of the Wyld was in my top three books of last year along with Blackwing and Traitor’s Blade. Such a fantastic book, so damn good.👌📚

Traitor’s Blade is so good, I laughed a lot through it. Blackwing was a dnf for me. Loved the writing, but I was so bored. Most people love it though.
